Flip + Reading Club (and more!)
I've had the opportunity to do a Reading Club with our elementary aged students this year. It is divided into two groups: a K-2 Reading Club and a 3-5 Reading Club. Each group meets once a week for about 45 minutes.
A big part of Reading Club is, of course, reading, but specifically read-alouds. I do one or two read-alouds with each group each time. Why read-alouds? Read-alouds have many benefits for students! (YES, even middle school students!) Check these benefits out:
Teacher read-alouds are not all we do in Reading Club, though! The last part of our Club is spent letting students read a book outloud to the group. They absolutely love this! As soon as they join our Reading Club meet, they raise their hands and ask, "Can I read a book when you're done?!" It has been a joy to see students get excited about reading! Students who may not volunteer to read during class are gaining confidence and are wanting to read during our Club time.
The only problem? We run out of time before everyone who wants to read has the chance or students can only read three or four pages. The solution: using Flip and letting students record themselves reading a book!
Flip is free and it is easy to get signed up. Once you are signed up, you can create and name the group(s) you want. It's super easy to get a join link for students, and you can even invite students from a Google Classroom. Another cool feature is you can create multiple topics within a group, so you could have a new topic for each story you want your students to read to monitor fluency, or you can even branch out and have them work out and explain math problems or share what they know about a science or social studies topic. There is so much you can use Flip for and students love to check out their classmates videos! Check out this video to get started!
